Supporting Families Starts with Financial Conversations

November is National Adoption Month—a time to celebrate families formed through adoption and foster-to-adopt. On November 22nd, courts across the country will open their doors to finalize thousands of adoptions, marking a day of joy and transformation for children and parents alike.

It’s also a powerful reminder of the role we, as adoption professionals, play in making adoption more accessible.

At Your Adoption Finance Coach (YAFC), we believe that awareness and transparency are the first steps. Our responsibility is to equip families with the information they need to make educated, confident decisions about their journey. That means openness in documentation, sample budgets, timelines, and expectations—and ensuring that staff have the tools to answer one of the most common questions families ask:

“How much does adoption cost?”

Closely followed by:

“What do other families do?” or “Do we qualify for grants?”

Every adoption is unique, every financial situation is different, and most families simply need reassurance that resources do exist. It’s a full-time effort to guide families through the financial realities of adoption with clarity, confidence, and compassion.

From Awareness to Action

Financial barriers can feel insurmountable. Adoption costs often range from $40,000–$70,000, depending on the path and timeline. Combined with paperwork, emotional strain, and uncertainty, it’s no wonder many families struggle to see a clear path forward.

Money conversations are often the hardest to have. Many families quietly worry about how they’ll cover costs, turning instead to hope or faith that it will all work out. Cultural stigmas around money—especially when intertwined with infertility or previous loss—can make the subject even more difficult to broach.

That’s where adoption professionals make the difference. By addressing financial realities early, providing realistic tools, and maintaining ongoing support, agencies can help families replace fear with informed action.
